How did you keep your head in the game?

Fellow martial arts students...as you sit at home trying to rehab yourself after a devastating injury, what do you do to stay sane? I am now 5 months post injury, with no hope of returning to martial arts for at least 6 more months...
what advice can you offer to help me keep my sanity?

  1. My ACL surgery was in May 2007. I tried to stay focused on the end result....a strong, stable knee. My husband and I operate a small dojo so it was easy for me to stay connected. I spent time in the dojo watching and coaching the students. The hardest part of rehab for me was when I was strong enough for daily activities but not able to resume karate (at the level I wanted).

    Good luck with your recovery!

  2. Thanks Michele! I am now at the point where I can get around decently without crutches, but clearly am not able to resume training... it is so hard!!! I work at my MMA school 3 days / week and I also teach a young children's class, so I am there constantly. Not to mention the fact that all of the other members of my family train, so I am always dropping off/ picking up, etc. It's so difficult to just sit on the bench while everyone else has the opportunity to participate! Sometimes I feel like being there so much is just like pouring salt in my wounds!

  3. Hi, Still Waiting,

I think physical activity helps; I kept working on push-ups and crunches, and I tried to do slow kicks once my legs were able (you have to be most careful about putting your weight on your injured leg). It must be very hard being in the school three days a week and watching everybody else work out. But you WILL get back!

  4. Reading martial arts books was a big helper to me. I also showed up at the dojo to watch class from time to time and kept in touch with friends from the dojo. Good luck to you-the middle months are very straining.
